Important notices

Before engaging our services, please review the following carefully.

Not a Financial Adviser

SSAS Consultant provides specialist SSAS consultancy and advisory services. We are not a regulated financial adviser under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA). We do not provide regulated financial advice on investments, pension transfers from defined benefit schemes, or other regulated activities. Where regulated advice is required, we will direct you to an appropriately authorised firm — so you always have the right guidance for the right decision.

Scope of Service

Our services cover SSAS education, scheme establishment, trustee guidance, HMRC registration, and ongoing scheme management support. We work alongside regulated professionals — including financial advisers, solicitors, and accountants — wherever their involvement is required by law or is genuinely in your best interests.

No Guarantees of Investment Performance

Nothing on this website or in any communication from SSAS Consultant constitutes a guarantee of investment performance or returns. The value of pension investments can go down as well as up. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. All investment decisions within a SSAS are made by the trustees, who bear responsibility for those decisions — and we will always ensure you understand that responsibility fully before you proceed.

Please read carefully

Pension transfer compliance

Please confirm that you have read and understood our resources on pension transfers and the rules that apply. The information below sets out what you will need to be aware of before initiating any transfer.

Pension transfers are entirely optional

You do not need to transfer an existing pension into your SSAS. Many members choose not to, and this decision has no bearing on the establishment or operation of your scheme. If you do wish to explore a transfer, the key compliance requirements below will apply.

01

Evidence of a financial connection between you and your company

As a member of the SSAS, your external pension provider will typically require evidence that you receive income from the company that sponsors the scheme. This is to establish a genuine financial link between you as an individual member and the company.

Acceptable evidence may include:

  • Bank statements showing receipt of money from the company — via PAYE salary, director's drawings, or expense reimbursements
  • Payslips, if you are paid via PAYE
  • Other documentary evidence of earnings from this source

Most external pension providers will expect to see evidence of at least three consecutive monthly payments before they will proceed with a transfer.

02

Evidence of a financial connection between your company and the SSAS

In addition to the connection between you and your company, your external pension provider will also want to see evidence that your company — as the sponsoring employer of the SSAS — is actively making contributions into the scheme.

This demonstrates that the SSAS is a genuine, active pension arrangement rather than a dormant structure. The contribution level does not need to be substantial — even a modest, regular employer contribution will typically satisfy this requirement.

A regular employer contribution of as little as £100 per month is generally sufficient to demonstrate an active financial connection between your company and the SSAS.

These are not SSAS requirements — they are your external provider's requirements

It is important to understand that the evidence requirements described above are not imposed by SSAS Consultant, nor are they requirements of the SSAS itself. They are due diligence requirements set by your existing external pension providers as part of their own transfer-out process.

Every external provider is different. Some will apply these rules strictly; others may take a more flexible approach. Some may request additional documentation beyond what is described here. We will guide you through the process and help you understand what your specific providers are likely to require — but we cannot control or predict the exact requirements of each individual provider.

If you have any questions about pension transfer compliance, please speak with us before initiating any transfer. We are here to help you navigate this process with confidence.

SSAS Consultant is not FCA authorised and does not advise on pension transfers

This is an important distinction that all clients must understand. SSAS Consultant is a specialist SSAS consultancy — we advise on the establishment, structure, and ongoing management of Small Self-Administered Schemes. We are not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and we do not provide regulated financial advice of any kind.

Advising on whether a pension transfer is suitable for you — including whether it is in your best interests to transfer benefits out of an existing scheme and into a SSAS — is a regulated activity under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. Only a firm that is authorised and regulated by the FCA is permitted to provide this advice.

If you are considering transferring any pension — particularly a defined benefit (final salary) scheme — you must seek independent financial advice from an FCA-authorised adviser before proceeding. This is not merely a recommendation; in many cases it is a legal requirement.

If you are in any doubt about whether a pension transfer is right for you, please consult an independent financial adviser (IFA) who is authorised by the FCA to advise on pension transfers. You can find a regulated adviser at unbiased.co.uk or via the FCA Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk.
